The home

The original settlement consisted of a group of houses surrounded by plots of cultivated land.
The typical rural building features the dwelling house and the farm sheds under the same roof.

The part of the house where the family lives is generally south facing, especially the stua, the room where the family spends most of the time, is located in the sunniest part of the building.
Stable, cowshed and hayloft are at the back of the house.

The dwelling home and the cowshed are made in masonry, while the hayloft is made of wood because hay needs ventilation to avoid it rotting.
This is the reason why decorative fretworks can still be seen on haylofts.
